In the New Year I will be moving into a new role within the University. In addition to managing a team of ten staff I will be working closely with a team of professional librarians, Heads of Service, and the Director of Library and Learning Services on various projects, so I wanted a course that would give me additional skills and confidence to build effective working relationships, and manage conflict should it arise.
The ‘Influencing and negotiating at work’ day course at Gloucestershire Enterprise Ltd was perfect in meeting my needs. Each delegate carried out a Strength Deployment Inventory so that we could better understand our personal strengths and behaviours when relating to others: both when things are going well, and also when in conflict. With this insight we could then examine our working relationships and understand how they could be improved.
The trainer Paul Archer was very engaging and – supported by his visual/written materials, the group discussions, and the role-play exercises that he facilitated – he created an extremely informative and practical session, as well as it being a very enjoyable learning experience. Having the opportunity to carry out a negotiation exercise in a ‘safe’ learning environment, with feedback from observers and Paul himself, was very beneficial.
I am delighted to say that on my very first day back at work after the course, I was able to use some of my new knowledge and skills in motivating my team on a particularly busy day. Then on the next day I was confident and effective when handling a conflict situation that suddenly arose; avoiding a confrontation through improved rapport and understanding of my colleague, as a direct result of the course.
The training room at GEL’s Twigworth premises was spacious and comfortable, and worked well for both the presentation and group work. After a busy morning, the buffet lunch was very welcome and delicious.
